Theoretically, Ilex guayusa might reduce the effects of phenytoin and increase the risk for convulsions.
Ilex guayusa contains caffeine. Animal research suggests that caffeine can decrease the anticonvulsant activity of phenytoin. The effect does not seem to be related to the seizure threshold-lowering effects of caffeine. However, the exact mechanism of this interaction is unclear.

Here's the short version: mephenytoin (Mesantoin) is an older anti-seizure medicine in the same family as phenytoin, and guayusa tea is basically a natural source of caffeine. Animal studies hint that caffeine may weaken the seizure-protecting effect of these drugs. So in theory, regularly drinking a lot of concentrated guayusa could make your mephenytoin work a little less well, which matters because the whole point is keeping seizures under control.

I want to be honest though: this is theoretical and based only on animal data, not solid human proof, and the reason behind it isn't fully understood. An occasional cup is unlikely to cause trouble. Still, since seizure control is too important to gamble with, check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding a daily guayusa habit.
