Here's the thing to keep in mind with this pairing. Deflazacort is a corticosteroid, and a big part of how it helps in Duchenne muscular dystrophy is by calming down and dialing back the immune system. Jiaogulan seems to do the opposite. Studies in animals and the lab suggest it can nudge the immune system to be more active, which could work against what deflazacort is trying to accomplish.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical, based on how the plant behaves, not on real-world cases of people having problems. Still, since deflazacort works by quieting the immune system, I'd loop in your doctor or pharmacist before adding jiaogulan rather than starting it on your own.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
