Deserpidine, Hydrochlorothiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Khat interacts with.

Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Your Oreticyl combines two blood pressure lowering medicines: deserpidine, which calms the nervous system, and hydrochlorothiazide, a water pill. Khat works in the opposite direction. Its stimulant chemicals (mainly cathinone, which acts a lot like amphetamine) raise blood pressure and speed up the heart. So mixing the two can work against your treatment and let your numbers creep back up.

In plain terms, khat may blunt the benefit you get from this medication, which could mean headaches, a pounding or racing heart, or readings that are higher than your doctor wants. Keep in mind khat is illegal in the U.S. and unsafe on its own. Please don't change your blood pressure medicine yourself. Talk with your pharmacist or doctor first.
