Human research shows that khat and its constituent, cathinone, can increase blood pressure. Theoretically, khat might reduce the effect of antihypertensive drug therapy. Some antihypertensive drugs include captopril (Capoten), enalapril (Vasotec), losartan (Cozaar), valsartan (Diovan), diltiazem (Cardizem), amlodipine (Norvasc), hydrochlorothiazide (HydroDiuril), furosemide (Lasix), and many others.

Here's the simple version: khat acts like a stimulant and tends to push your blood pressure up. Triamterene (Dyrenium) is a water pill that helps your body shed extra fluid, and it's often used to keep blood pressure and swelling under control. So you've got two things working against each other. Khat may blunt the benefit you're getting from triamterene, meaning your pressure or fluid retention could creep back up.

Triamterene isn't a prodrug, so this isn't about how your body activates it. It's really about khat's stimulant effect counteracting your treatment. On top of that, khat is illegal in the U.S. and carries real heart risks on its own. Please loop in your doctor or pharmacist before changing anything.

What Is Triamterene Used For?

Brand name: Dyrenium

Triamterene capsules are used to treat edema — excess fluid buildup in the body — linked to several conditions, including congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, and nephrotic syndrome (a kidney disorder causing protein loss and swelling). It is also used for steroid-induced edema, idiopathic edema (fluid retention with no clear cause), and edema due to secondary hyperaldosteronism (overproduction of a hormone that causes the body to hold onto sodium and water).

It can be used on its own or alongside other diuretics, either to boost fluid removal or to help preserve potassium levels. Both Dyrenium and Triamterene capsules share the same approved uses as described above.
