Why this applies to Lurasidone

Lurasidone falls under ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS — the group Lithium interacts with.

Theoretically, taking lithium supplements with antipsychotic drugs might increase the risk of encephalopathic syndrome.
Encephalopathic syndrome has been reported in multiple patients taking prescription lithium and antipsychotics concomitantly. Symptoms have included weakness and lethargy, fever, confusion, and extrapyramidal symptoms. In some patients, resulting brain damage was irreversible. Although there is no established causal relationship between these symptoms and the combination of lithium and antipsychotic medications, there is a theoretical relationship. It is unclear if this interaction would occur with the smaller doses found in lithium supplements.

Here's something worth knowing if you take Latuda (lurasidone) and you're thinking about a lithium supplement. Over the years, there have been scattered reports of people on prescription lithium plus an antipsychotic developing what's called an encephalopathic syndrome. That's a fancy term for symptoms like unusual weakness, sluggishness, fever, confusion, and stiff or jerky movements (extrapyramidal symptoms). In a few cases the effects were lasting, which is why we take it seriously even though it's uncommon.

The honest truth is this is theoretical and based on anecdotal reports, not strong studies. We also don't know if the small amounts in supplements like lithium orotate are enough to matter, since the reports involved prescription doses. Lurasidone isn't a prodrug here, so this isn't about activation. Before combining the two, please run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Lurasidone Used For?

Brand name: Latuda

Lurasidone hydrochloride tablets are approved to treat schizophrenia in adults and adolescents aged 13 to 17, and to treat depressive episodes associated with bipolar I disorder (bipolar depression) in adults and children aged 10 to 17. Latuda is one of the brand names under which lurasidone is available as a tablet.

For bipolar depression, lurasidone can be used on its own (monotherapy) in adults and pediatric patients aged 10 to 17, or used alongside lithium or valproate (adjunctive therapy) in adults.
