Here's the gist with lithium and Skelaxin (metaxalone). Lithium can affect how nerves talk to muscles, and in theory it might deepen or stretch out the muscle-relaxing effect of a drug like metaxalone. If that happened, you could feel more of what metaxalone already does: extra drowsiness, dizziness, feeling weak or unsteady, or just very floppy and sluggish.

Now the honest part. This warning is theoretical, based on how these drugs behave on paper, not on solid human studies. We also don't really know if the small amounts in over-the-counter lithium products (like lithium orotate) are even enough to matter. Metaxalone isn't a prodrug, so there's no flip in direction here. Still, before pairing these, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Metaxalone tablets are used to help relieve discomfort caused by acute (short-term), painful musculoskeletal conditions — things like muscle strains, sprains, and similar injuries. It is meant to be used together with rest, physical therapy, and other treatments, not as a stand-alone fix.

This use applies to adults and adolescents 13 years of age and older. Metaxalone tablets are available as the branded product Skelaxin and as a generic.
