Manganese and Sertindole

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS

Why this applies to Sertindole

Sertindole falls under ANTIPSYCHOTIC DRUGS — the group Manganese interacts with.

Theoretically, the risk for manganese toxicity might increase when taken with antipsychotic drugs.
Hallucinations and behavioral changes have been reported in a patient with liver disease who was taking haloperidol and manganese. Researchers speculate that taking manganese along with haloperidol, phenothiazine-derivatives, or other antipsychotic medications might increase the risk of manganese toxicity in some patients.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the thing to know about pairing manganese with Sertindole: this isn't a case where one changes how the other is broken down. Sertindole isn't a prodrug, so manganese won't make it stronger or weaker. The concern runs the other way. The worry is that taking an antipsychotic alongside manganese supplements might raise your odds of manganese building up in the body, which can affect the nervous system.

I want to be straight with you: this is very weak, theoretical information. It comes from a single report in a person with liver disease who was on a different antipsychotic, not from solid studies on Sertindole. Everyday food amounts of manganese are unlikely to cause trouble. The caution is really about concentrated, high-dose supplements. If you're considering one, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Manganese

What is Manganese?

Manganese
  • Bone health support
  • Antioxidant and enzyme support
  • Filling dietary gaps
  • Metabolism support
  • Wound healing

Manganese is an essential trace mineral your body needs in small amounts for bone formation, metabolism, and antioxidant defense, and most people get enough from a normal diet. Supplements may help if you have a genuine deficiency, but too much can be harmful—especially to the nervous system—so do not take high doses without guidance from a pharmacist or doctor.
