MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs)
Why this applies to Safinamide Mesylate
Safinamide Mesylate falls under MONOAMINE OXIDASE INHIBITORS (MAOIs) — the group Octopamine interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the simple version: octopamine is a stimulant-like compound that your body normally breaks down using an enzyme called monoamine oxidase. Safinamide (Xadago) blocks part of that enzyme system as part of how it helps your Parkinson's symptoms. So if you take octopamine while on safinamide, the octopamine isn't cleared as quickly and can pile up, which means more of its stimulant effects.
In real life that could mean a jump in blood pressure, a racing or pounding heartbeat, headache, or feeling jittery and anxious. To be honest, this concern is theoretical and based on how these two work, not on hard human studies, so I don't want to alarm you. Still, octopamine shows up in many weight-loss and sports products, so it's worth checking labels. Please run it by your pharmacist or doctor before using any supplement like this.

About Octopamine
What is Octopamine?
- Weight loss and fat burning
- Boosting energy
- Athletic performance
- Appetite suppression
Octopamine is a stimulant-like compound found in small amounts in some plants (such as bitter orange) and made naturally in the body. It is marketed mostly in weight-loss and sports supplements, but human evidence that it actually helps with fat loss or performance is very limited. Because it can affect the heart and blood pressure and is banned in some sports, talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it.
About Safinamide
What Is Safinamide Used For?
Brand name: Xadago
Xadago (safinamide) is used as an add-on treatment for adults with Parkinson's disease who are already taking levodopa/carbidopa and experiencing 'off' episodes — times when the medication wears off and Parkinson's symptoms return before the next dose is due.
Xadago is not used alone; it works only in combination with levodopa/carbidopa.
