Drug & supplement interaction

Octopamine + Zanubrutinib

Zanubrutinib brand name: Brukinsa.

No Known Interaction
The bottom line No known interaction

We found no known interaction between Octopamine and Zanubrutinib in our sources. Absence of a documented interaction is not the same as proven safety, and does not guarantee one does not exist. Do not start, stop, or change a medication or supplement based on this page; confirm with your pharmacist or doctor first. Additionally, although there is no interaction, the two are separately associated with some of the same side effects, which would make a new symptom harder to attribute to one or the other.

Octopamine and Zanubrutinib

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Zanubrutinib and Octopamine in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Zanubrutinib

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Zanubrutinib is filed under 5 classifications — including cytochrome p450 2c19 (cyp2c19) inducers, cytochrome p450 3a4 (cyp3a4) inducers, p-glycoprotein substrates. Octopamine has documented interactions with 3 drug classes — the most serious being antihypertensive drugs (moderate), monoamine oxidase inhibitors (maois) (moderate) and stimulant drugs (minor) — and none of Zanubrutinib’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

No Interaction Found — But Data Suggests Octopamine and Zanubrutinib May Share a Side Effect

This is not an interaction. Neither one changes how your body handles the other, and nothing here says they react together. What our sources do show is that each has separately been linked to the effects below — so taking both can make those effects more likely to turn up, and harder to pin on one or the other if they do. One of them is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

“Octopamine is commonly used as a stimulant. Due to its chemical similarities to synephrine, a stimulant with the potential to cause severe cardiovascular effects, Health Canada has set the maximum daily dose of octopamine at 50 mg.”

Reported for Octopamine but not commonly for Zanubrutinib: a heart attack and dehydration.

Effects for Zanubrutinib come from the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of its FDA label; effects for Octopamine come from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record, quoted above. Where a percentage is shown, it is the share of 3,837 voluntary FDA FAERS reports for Zanubrutinib that mention that effect — a reporting proportion, not an incidence rate and not evidence the drug caused it. Wording is matched across sources by our own clinical vocabulary, so treat this as a prompt to pay attention, not a diagnosis.

This page covers Octopamine only. If you take other supplements — a multivitamin, a sleep aid, something for joints — the Zanubrutinib page lists 160 supplements it has a documented interaction with, worst first, each one explained.

The most serious there right now: Activated Charcoal (major), Grapefruit (major), St. John's Wort (major), Acacia Rigidula (moderate) and Adrafinil (moderate).

By severity: 3 major · 119 moderate · 38 minor.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Zanubrutinib page

“Grapefruit is the biggest supplement risk with zanubrutinib (Brukinsa), a targeted therapy for certain blood cancers, and this list deserves genuine care. Grapefruit blocks the enzyme (CYP3A4) that clears the drug, so levels can climb and side effects with them.”

About Octopamine

What is Octopamine?

  • Weight loss and fat burning
  • Boosting energy
  • Athletic performance
  • Appetite suppression

Octopamine is a stimulant-like compound found in small amounts in some plants (such as bitter orange) and made naturally in the body. It is marketed mostly in weight-loss and sports supplements, but human evidence that it actually helps with fat loss or performance is very limited. Because it can affect the heart and blood pressure and is banned in some sports, talk to a pharmacist or doctor before using it.

Octopamine is a naturally occurring compound; supplement forms are usually synthetic or derived from bitter orange (Citrus aurantium) peel · Capsules, tablets, powders (often in fat-burner and pre-workout blends)

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Octopamine is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Octopamine record says about it on its own.

Octopamine: dosing

There is no well-established, standardized dose for octopamine as a supplement. It usually appears in combination products, and amounts vary widely from one brand to another. If you choose to use a product containing octopamine, follow the directions on the label and do not exceed them.

About Zanubrutinib

What Is Zanubrutinib Used For?

Brand name: Brukinsa

Brukinsa (zanubrutinib) is used to treat adult patients with several blood cancers. These include chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL), Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM), mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) after at least one prior treatment, relapsed or refractory marginal zone lymphoma (MZL) after at least one prior anti-CD20 regimen, and relapsed or refractory follicular lymphoma (FL) in combination with obinutuzumab after two or more prior lines of treatment.

Some of these uses — MCL, MZL, and FL — are approved under accelerated approval, meaning they are based on tumor response rates rather than confirmed long-term survival benefit. Continued approval for those uses may depend on results from confirmatory trials.
