Abemaciclib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear abemaciclib (Verzenio) out of your system. In lab dish studies, an extract of Padang cassia slowed that enzyme down. If that were to happen in real life, abemaciclib could build up and hit you harder than expected, meaning more of its usual side effects like diarrhea, fatigue, low blood counts, or nausea.

The honest part: this is based only on test-tube research, not real people, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. Sprinkling cinnamon on your food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are a different story. Since abemaciclib is a cancer drug, please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding any cinnamon supplement.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

About Abemaciclib

What Is Abemaciclib Used For?

Brand name: Verzenio

Verzenio (abemaciclib) is used to treat HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer in adults. For early breast cancer at high risk of recurrence, Verzenio is taken alongside endocrine therapy (tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor) after surgery to help prevent the cancer from coming back.

For advanced or metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread), Verzenio can be used in combination with an aromatase inhibitor as a first hormonal treatment, in combination with fulvestrant after the cancer has progressed on endocrine therapy, or alone after prior endocrine therapy and chemotherapy have stopped working.
