Acalabrutinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist for Calquence (acalabrutinib): your liver relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this drug out of your system. Lab studies suggest that concentrated Padang cassia (a type of cassia cinnamon) may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in the body, more acalabrutinib could linger, which in theory could mean stronger effects and a higher chance of side effects like bruising, bleeding, headaches, low blood counts, or infections.

The honest part: this is only based on test-tube research, not real people, so we don't know if it truly matters. Sprinkling cinnamon on your food is very unlikely to be an issue. Before starting any concentrated cinnamon supplement, please check with your oncologist or pharmacist first.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

What Is Acalabrutinib Used For?

Brand name: Calquence

Calquence is used to treat adults with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) — either newly diagnosed (in combination with bendamustine and rituximab, for patients who are not candidates for a stem cell transplant) or previously treated (after at least one prior therapy). It is also used to treat adults with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) or small lymphocytic lymphoma (SLL).

Both the capsule and tablet forms of Calquence are approved for all three of these uses. The specific combination regimen and treatment schedule depend on the condition being treated and what other medicines are used alongside it — your care team will map that out for you.
