Buproprion, Dextromethorphan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Auvelity combines bupropion and dextromethorphan. The interesting thing here is that the bupropion part is actually doing double duty: it purposely blocks an enzyme to keep dextromethorphan levels higher in your body, which is how the medicine works. Padang cassia (a cassia cinnamon) showed in lab-dish studies that it may slow down a different liver enzyme, CYP3A4. In theory, that could let a bit more of the medicine linger, possibly nudging up side effects like dizziness, headache, dry mouth, nausea, jitteriness, or trouble sleeping.

But keep this in perspective. This is only test-tube evidence, not proof in real people, and normal cooking amounts of cinnamon are very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon supplements are a different story, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting one.
