Busulfan falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist for busulfan (Myleran, Busulfex). Your body partly uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this chemo drug. Lab studies suggest concentrated Padang cassia (cassia cinnamon) extract can slow that enzyme down. In theory, if it works the same way in people, busulfan could clear a bit more slowly and build up, which might mean stronger effects and more side effects like low blood counts, nausea, mouth sores, or, at very high levels, liver problems.

Keep this in perspective. This is based only on test-tube research, not real patients, so it's far from proven. Busulfan is a serious drug given under close supervision, and even small changes matter, so please don't add a cinnamon supplement without checking with your oncology team first. A sprinkle on food is not the concern here.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

What Is Busulfan Used For?

Brand names: Myleran, Busulfex

Busulfan is used to treat chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. The specific use depends on the form and product.

Myleran (oral tablet) is used for the palliative treatment of CML — meaning it helps control the disease and relieve symptoms. The intravenous injection forms (Busulfex and Busulfan Injection) are used in combination with another chemotherapy drug, cyclophosphamide, as a conditioning regimen to prepare the body before an allogeneic hematopoietic progenitor cell transplant (a bone marrow or stem cell transplant from a donor) for CML.
