Padang Cassia + Citalopram
Citalopram brand name: Celexa.
Padang Cassia has a moderate interaction with Citalopram. In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity.

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.
CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
Why this applies to Citalopram
Citalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for Celexa (citalopram). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break this antidepressant down. In test-tube studies, a concentrated extract of Padang cassia cinnamon slowed that enzyme. If that happened in the body, citalopram could clear a bit slower and build up, which in theory might mean more side effects like drowsiness, nausea, dry mouth, or, with higher levels, changes in your heart's rhythm (citalopram already carries a QT warning).
I want to be honest though: this is only lab evidence, not seen in real patients. A sprinkle of cinnamon on your oatmeal is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are the bigger question, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before taking those alongside Celexa.

About Padang Cassia
What is Padang Cassia?
- Adding flavor to food
- Digestive upset
- Blood sugar support
- Antimicrobial purposes
- Antioxidant support
Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
About Citalopram
What Is Citalopram Used For?
Brand name: Celexa
Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.
Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.
