These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Padang Cassia interacts with whole categories of medication. Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Padang Cassia in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
1 of 2Why this applies to Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol
Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with your birth control pill (Yasmin and similar brands): the worry isn't that cinnamon changes how well the pill works. It's about your liver. Padang cassia naturally contains coumarin, which in very large or concentrated amounts has been linked to liver irritation. Estrogen-containing pills can occasionally stress the liver too, so stacking the two could, in theory, add up.
To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how these things behave, not strong human proof. The amount of cinnamon you sprinkle on oatmeal or toast is not a problem. Concentrated cinnamon capsules taken daily are the real question. If you take those, run it by your pharmacist or doctor, especially if you have any liver issues or notice yellowing skin, dark urine, or belly pain.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Drospirenone, Ethinyl Estradiol also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Your birth control pill (Yasmin and similar brands) is partly cleared by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a test-tube study, an extract of Padang cassia cinnamon slowed that enzyme down a bit. In theory, if this enzyme works slower, the hormones in your pill could hang around a little longer and build up, which might bump up typical side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, bloating, or mood changes.
The important context: this is only lab data, not real people, so we don't actually know if it matters in your body. Sprinkling cinnamon on your food is no concern at all. If you're thinking about taking concentrated cinnamon capsules, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Padang Cassia
What is Padang Cassia?
- Adding flavor to food
- Digestive upset
- Blood sugar support
- Antimicrobial purposes
- Antioxidant support
Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
