In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist for Lunesta (eszopiclone): your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this sleep aid out of your system. Lab studies hint that concentrated Padang cassia (a cassia cinnamon) may slow that enzyme down. If it does, eszopiclone could hang around a little longer and feel stronger. In real life that might show up as extra grogginess, next-morning drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It comes only from test-tube research, not from people, so it's more of a theoretical concern than a proven problem. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is not the issue here, but concentrated cinnamon capsules are worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Brand name: Lunesta

Eszopiclone tablets — sold under the brand name Lunesta and as generics — are indicated for the treatment of insomnia. In clinical studies, eszopiclone helped people fall asleep more quickly (reduced sleep latency) and stay asleep through the night (improved sleep maintenance).

Clinical trials supporting its effectiveness lasted up to 6 months in adults and up to 2 weeks in elderly patients. Lunesta and eszopiclone generics are approved for this same indication across the available tablet formulations.
