Lapatinib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist for lapatinib (Tykerb): your body relies heavily on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this drug out. Lab studies suggest that concentrated Padang cassia (cassia cinnamon) may slow that enzyme down a bit. If the enzyme works slower, lapatinib could build up more than expected, which in theory could mean stronger side effects like diarrhea, nausea, rash, tiredness, or, less commonly, effects on the heart's rhythm or liver.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This is based only on test-tube work, not real people, so we don't know how meaningful it is. Sprinkling cinnamon on your food is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are a different story, especially since lapatinib is a serious cancer medicine. Please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding any cinnamon supplement.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

What Is Lapatinib Used For?

Brand name: Tykerb

Lapatinib tablets — sold under the brand name Tykerb — are used to treat advanced or metastatic breast cancer in patients whose tumors overexpress the HER2 protein. They are always used in combination with another medicine, not alone.

Tykerb is approved in combination with capecitabine for HER2-positive advanced or metastatic breast cancer in patients who have already received prior treatment including an anthracycline, a taxane, and trastuzumab, and whose disease has progressed on trastuzumab. Tykerb is also approved in combination with letrozole for postmenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive, HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer when hormonal therapy is appropriate.
