Leflunomide falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of Padang cassia might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Padang cassia contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.

Here's the thing about leflunomide (Arava): it can already be tough on the liver. That's why your doctor checks your liver enzymes with blood tests, especially when you first start it. The worry with concentrated Padang cassia supplements is that this type of cinnamon naturally contains coumarin, which in large amounts has been linked to liver stress. Stacking a liver-stressing supplement on top of a liver-stressing drug could, in theory, add up.

To be clear, this is a theoretical concern based on how these things work, not proven cases. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal is no big deal. But before adding a daily cinnamon capsule, please check with your pharmacist or doctor so your liver labs stay on track.

What Is Leflunomide Used For?

Brand name: Arava

Leflunomide tablets — sold under the brand name Arava and as generic leflunomide — are used to treat active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adults. Both Arava and generic leflunomide tablets are FDA-approved for this use.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the joints, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. Leflunomide helps calm that overactive immune response to reduce symptoms and slow joint damage.
