HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Mercaptopurine
Mercaptopurine falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the concern with pairing concentrated Padang cassia (cassia cinnamon) supplements with mercaptopurine. Cassia cinnamon naturally contains coumarin, which in large or daily supplement amounts has been linked to liver stress. Mercaptopurine is already a drug that can be tough on the liver, so stacking another potential liver irritant on top could add to that risk. Possible warning signs of liver trouble include yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness.
I'll be honest, this is a theoretical caution based on how coumarin behaves, not strong proof in people on this drug. Sprinkling cinnamon on food is not the issue here, concentrated capsules are. Since you're on chemo, please run any cinnamon supplement past your oncology team or pharmacist first.

“Mercaptopurine (Purixan) works by deliberately suppressing the immune system, whether for leukemia or inflammatory bowel disease, and the supplement interactions on this page deserve genuine care rather than a quick skim. Two problems dominate.”

About Padang Cassia
What is Padang Cassia?
- Adding flavor to food
- Digestive upset
- Blood sugar support
- Antimicrobial purposes
- Antioxidant support
Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
About Mercaptopurine
What Is Mercaptopurine Used For?
Brand name: Purixan
Mercaptopurine — available as a tablet and as an oral suspension — is used to treat acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), a type of blood cancer. It is given as part of a combination chemotherapy maintenance regimen, meaning it works alongside other cancer medicines to keep leukemia in remission.
Both the tablet form and the oral suspension form carry this indication for adult and pediatric patients. The oral suspension is particularly useful for patients who cannot swallow tablets.
