Mestranol, Norethynodrel falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of Padang cassia might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Padang cassia contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.

Here's the deal with Enovid-E (mestranol and norethynodrel) and concentrated Padang cassia cinnamon. This isn't about the cinnamon changing how your birth control hormones work. The concern is simpler: both the supplement and these hormones are processed by your liver, and large supplement doses of cassia contain coumarin, which can stress the liver in sensitive people.

To be honest, this is mostly a theoretical worry based on how these compounds behave, not something proven in people taking the two together. Liver trouble from estrogen pills is uncommon but possible, so stacking another liver-stressing product on top isn't ideal. Cinnamon on your toast or in food is no problem at all. If you're thinking about a daily cinnamon supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Enovid-E combines two hormones, mestranol and norethynodrel, and your body relies on the CYP3A4 enzyme to help clear estrogen out of your system. The thinking here is that concentrated Padang cassia (a cassia cinnamon) may slow that enzyme down a bit. If estrogen lingers longer, you might notice more of the typical hormone side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, headaches, or mood shifts.

Here's the reassuring part: this comes only from a lab (test tube) study, not from real people, so it's mostly theoretical. Cinnamon sprinkled on your oatmeal or toast won't do this. The question is really about high-dose cinnamon capsules. Before starting any concentrated cinnamon supplement, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.
