Modafinil falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist with Padang cassia and modafinil. Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear modafinil. In lab studies (not in people), a concentrated extract of this cinnamon slowed that enzyme down. If that happened in your body, modafinil could hang around a bit longer and feel stronger, which might mean more of its usual effects like a racing or pounding heart, headache, jitteriness, anxiety, or trouble sleeping.

I'll be honest, this is only a theoretical concern based on test-tube work, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Cinnamon sprinkled on your food is very unlikely to matter. If you're taking concentrated cinnamon capsules, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

What Is Modafinil Used For?

Brand names: Provigil, Sparlon, Alertec

Modafinil (also sold as Provigil) is used to improve wakefulness in adults who experience excessive sleepiness due to narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), or shift work disorder (SWD).

In OSA, modafinil treats the sleepiness — not the underlying airway obstruction itself. It is used alongside standard treatments such as CPAP (a breathing device worn during sleep), not as a replacement for them. If CPAP is appropriate for you, your doctor will want you to use it consistently even while taking modafinil.
