Nimodipine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist for nimodipine: your liver relies on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break this medicine down. Lab studies hint that concentrated Padang cassia (a cassia cinnamon) may slow that enzyme. If that happens in real life, more nimodipine could linger in your blood than expected. Since nimodipine relaxes blood vessels, the main worry would be your blood pressure dropping too low, leaving you dizzy, lightheaded, flushed, or with a faster heartbeat.

That said, this is only test-tube evidence, so it's theoretical for now. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal almost certainly won't matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are a different story. Before starting any, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.

What Is Nimodipine Used For?

Nimodipine — available as capsules and oral solution — is used to improve neurological outcomes after a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a type of bleeding that occurs around the brain when an intracranial berry aneurysm ruptures. It works to reduce the incidence and severity of ischemic deficits (areas of the brain damaged by reduced blood flow) that can follow this kind of bleed.

This use applies across nimodipine capsules, nimodipine oral solution, and Nymalize oral solution. It is indicated for adult patients regardless of how severe their neurological condition is at the time treatment begins.
