In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the connection worth knowing about. Your blood pressure medicine, nitrendipine, is cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, an extract of Padang cassia slowed that same enzyme down. If that were to happen in real life, your body might clear nitrendipine more slowly, letting more of it build up. That could mean a stronger effect than expected, so you might notice dizziness, flushing, headache, swollen ankles, or your blood pressure dropping too low.

The honest part: this is based only on lab research, not on people, so it may not amount to much. Sprinkling cinnamon on your toast is no concern at all. If you're thinking about a concentrated cinnamon supplement, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts.
