HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS
Why this applies to Sodium valproate
Sodium valproate falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the thing to know about pairing concentrated Padang cassia with sodium valproate (Epilim). Valproate already carries its own risk of stressing the liver, especially early in treatment. Padang cassia is a cassia-type cinnamon that naturally contains coumarin, and in large supplement doses coumarin has been linked to liver irritation. So the worry isn't that cinnamon changes your valproate levels. It's that two things that can each be hard on the liver might add up.
This is a theoretical concern based on how these compounds behave, not strong human proof, so don't panic. Using cinnamon as a kitchen spice is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated capsules are a different story. Watch for warning signs like yellow skin or eyes, dark urine, belly pain, or unusual tiredness, and check with your pharmacist or doctor before starting any cinnamon supplement.

About Padang Cassia
What is Padang Cassia?
- Adding flavor to food
- Digestive upset
- Blood sugar support
- Antimicrobial purposes
- Antioxidant support
Padang Cassia is a type of cinnamon (Indonesian or Korintje cinnamon) grown mainly in Indonesia and used widely as a kitchen spice. As a supplement, evidence for health benefits like blood sugar control is limited and mixed, and like other cassia cinnamons it naturally contains coumarin, which can be harmful to the liver in large amounts. Use food amounts freely, but talk to a pharmacist or doctor before taking concentrated cinnamon supplements.
