Trazodone falls under HEPATOTOXIC DRUGS — the group Padang Cassia interacts with.

There is some concern that ingesting large amounts of Padang cassia might cause hepatotoxicity in some people. Padang cassia contains coumarin. Coumarin has caused hepatotoxicity in animal models. In otherwise healthy humans, very high doses of coumarin, from 50-7000 mg daily, can result in hepatotoxicity that resolves when coumarin use is discontinued. Lower amounts might also cause liver problems in sensitive people, such as those with liver disease or those taking potentially hepatotoxic agents.

Here's the gist with trazodone and Padang cassia. This particular cinnamon naturally contains coumarin, a compound that, in very large amounts, can stress the liver. Trazodone can occasionally affect the liver too, so the worry is simply about stacking two things that lean on the same organ at the same time.

Now, a few important caveats. This concern is theoretical, based mostly on how coumarin behaves in animals and at very high doses. The cinnamon you sprinkle on oatmeal or toast won't move the needle. The real question is concentrated cinnamon capsules, especially if you have liver issues. If you're considering a daily cinnamon supplement alongside trazodone, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Trazodone also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.

In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the simple version: your body relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down trazodone. Lab-dish research suggests that concentrated Padang cassia (a cassia-type cinnamon) may slow that enzyme down. If that happens in real life, trazodone could clear out more slowly and build up a bit, which could mean stronger effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, or feeling lightheaded when you stand up.

I want to be honest about the strength of this, though. It's only from test-tube work, not from people, so it's more theoretical than proven. Sprinkling cinnamon on your oatmeal won't be an issue. The question is really about daily concentrated cinnamon capsules, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing those with trazodone.
