In vitro research shows that a methanol extract of Padang cassia inhibits cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) activity. Theoretically, taking Padang cassia with CYP3A4 substrates might increase the effects and side effects of these substrates.

Here's the gist for Voxelotor (Oxbryta): your body relies heavily on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medication out. Padang Cassia, a type of cassia cinnamon, was shown in test-tube studies to slow that same enzyme down. If that effect carried over into people, it could mean more voxelotor lingering in your system, which might bump up side effects like headache, nausea, diarrhea, or stomach discomfort.

I want to keep this in perspective, though. This warning comes only from lab research, not from real patients, so it's theoretical for now. Sprinkling cinnamon on your food almost certainly won't matter. Concentrated cinnamon capsules are a different story, so check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding those.

Oxbryta (voxelotor) is approved to treat sickle cell disease (SCD) in adults and in children as young as 4 years old. It works by targeting the underlying problem in sickle cell disease — the abnormal hemoglobin that causes red blood cells to take on a rigid, sickle shape.

This approval was granted under the FDA's accelerated approval pathway, based on the drug's ability to raise hemoglobin levels. Continued approval may depend on results from confirmatory clinical trials showing broader clinical benefit.
