Panax Notoginseng and Aspirin, Dipyridamole

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

ASPIRIN

Theoretically, taking Panax notoginseng concomitantly with aspirin may increase the risk of adverse effects from both products.
Animal research shows that taking Panax notoginseng extract with aspirin increases blood levels of salicylic acid by approximately 50% and blood levels of Panax notoginseng by 75% to 196%. This effect may be due to increased absorption of both products.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Aggrenox combines two blood thinners: low-dose aspirin and dipyridamole. Both are already working to keep your platelets from sticking together, so you're set up to bruise and bleed a little more easily as it is. Here's the wrinkle with Panax notoginseng: this herb is traditionally used to affect bleeding and circulation, and on top of that, animal studies hint it may raise the blood levels of aspirin (the salicylate part) by roughly half, and raise its own levels too, possibly by better absorption.

This is theoretical, drawn from lab and animal work, not solid human studies, so don't panic. Still, the realistic concern is extra bleeding risk: easy bruising, nosebleeds, bleeding gums, or stomach upset from the aspirin. Please check with your pharmacist or doctor before pairing these.
