Abemaciclib falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Passion Flower interacts with.

Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.

Here's the situation with passion flower and your Verzenio (abemaciclib). Abemaciclib is cleared from your body by a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Some early lab research hints that passion flower might gently speed up that enzyme, which in theory could clear abemaciclib a little faster and make it slightly less effective. Abemaciclib is an active cancer drug (not a prodrug), so faster clearance would mean weaker effect, not stronger.

The good news: this is only a theoretical, lab-based concern, and the effect seen was far weaker than known enzyme boosters. Still, because this drug treats breast cancer, I wouldn't want to risk reducing its benefit. Please check with your oncologist or pharmacist before adding passion flower.

About Abemaciclib

What Is Abemaciclib Used For?

Brand name: Verzenio

Verzenio (abemaciclib) is used to treat HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer in adults. For early breast cancer at high risk of recurrence, Verzenio is taken alongside endocrine therapy (tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor) after surgery to help prevent the cancer from coming back.

For advanced or metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread), Verzenio can be used in combination with an aromatase inhibitor as a first hormonal treatment, in combination with fulvestrant after the cancer has progressed on endocrine therapy, or alone after prior endocrine therapy and chemotherapy have stopped working.
