Darunavir falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Passion Flower interacts with.

Theoretically, passion flower might decrease the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research suggests that passion flower can induce CYP3A4 enzymes, albeit to a much lower degree than rifampin, a known CYP3A4 inducer.

Here's the gist for darunavir (Prezista), your HIV medication. Your body clears darunavir using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which is also why it's paired with a booster like ritonavir or cobicistat to keep blood levels high enough to work. Lab studies hint that passion flower might gently speed up CYP3A4. In theory, that could nudge darunavir levels down a bit, and with HIV meds you really want steady, reliable levels so the virus stays controlled.

That said, this concern comes only from test-tube research, and the effect looked mild, much weaker than strong inducers. So it's more of a caution than a proven problem. Since darunavir is too important to gamble with, please run passion flower by your pharmacist or HIV provider before starting it.

About Darunavir

What Is Darunavir Used For?

Brand name: Prezista

Darunavir treats HIV-1 infection in adults and in children who are at least 3 years old and weigh at least 10 kg (about 22 lbs). It is not a cure for HIV, but it is used as part of a combination antiretroviral regimen to control the virus.

Darunavir must always be taken together with ritonavir — that pairing is required for darunavir to work properly. Both Prezista (brand name) and generic darunavir tablets are approved for this use. Prezista is also available as an oral suspension, which is particularly useful for younger or smaller patients.
