Quetiapine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2D6 (CYP2D6) SUBSTRATES — the group Phellodendron interacts with.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP2D6.

Here's the gist: Phellodendron supplies berberine, which lab work and some early human data suggest can slow down a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Your body uses that enzyme as one of the routes for clearing quetiapine. If that pathway gets partly blocked, quetiapine could clear a little more slowly and build up, which may mean stronger effects like drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when you stand, or a faster heartbeat.

I want to keep this in perspective. This is a theoretical concern based mainly on lab studies, and quetiapine actually relies more heavily on a different enzyme (CYP3A4), so the real-world impact may be small. Still, please don't start, stop, or change anything on your own. Check with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially since concentrated supplements act differently than food.

Here's the gist for Seroquel: your liver leans heavily on an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear quetiapine out of your system. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and small human studies suggest can partly block that same enzyme. If it slows the breakdown of your dose, more quetiapine can linger in your blood, which may mean stronger effects like extra drowsiness, dizziness, low blood pressure when you stand up, or a foggy, sluggish feeling.

Keep in mind this is theoretical, based on how berberine behaves rather than solid real-world reports, so it may never cause you trouble. Still, since quetiapine's sedation can sneak up on you, I'd run any phellodendron product past your pharmacist or doctor before combining the two.

What Is Quetiapine Used For?

Brand names: Seroquel, Dopaquel

Quetiapine treats schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in adults and certain age groups of children and adolescents. For bipolar disorder, it is approved for manic episodes (both as a stand-alone treatment and alongside lithium or divalproex) and for depressive episodes.

The extended-release form of quetiapine is also approved as add-on therapy for major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who are already taking an antidepressant. The regular tablet form is not approved for this use.
