Here's the gist: chlorpromazine already tends to make people drowsy, foggy, or lightheaded, especially when you first start it. Phellodendron contains berberine, and in animal studies berberine showed some calming, sedative-type activity. So the worry is simple addition, two things that can slow you down stacking on top of each other and leaving you more sedated than you'd expect.

I want to be honest about the strength of this concern. It's theoretical, based on lab and animal work, not on solid human evidence, so I wouldn't lose sleep over it. Still, watch for extra sleepiness, dizziness, or feeling unsteady, which raises fall risk. Don't change either one on your own. Just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before combining them.

Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2D6.
Phellodendron contains berberine. In vitro research and preliminary clinical evidence show that berberine can inhibit CYP2D6. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP2D6.

Here's the simple version. Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2D6 to help clear chlorpromazine out of your system. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab studies and a little early human research suggest can slow that enzyme down. If the enzyme works slower, chlorpromazine may hang around longer and build up, which could mean stronger effects and more side effects, such as heavy drowsiness, dizziness or lightheadedness when you stand, dry mouth, constipation, or feeling unusually sluggish.

I want to be honest that this is mostly theoretical right now, based on how these compounds behave, not strong real-world data. Still, since chlorpromazine already causes plenty of sedation on its own, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them rather than guessing.

What Is Chlorpromazine Used For?

Brand names: Thorazine, Thorazine Spansules

Chlorpromazine is used to manage psychotic disorders and treat schizophrenia. It also controls nausea and vomiting, relieves restlessness and apprehension before surgery, and controls the manic phase of manic-depressive illness. Other uses include relief of intractable hiccups, treatment of acute intermittent porphyria, and use as an adjunct in tetanus treatment.

In children ages 1 to 12, it is used for severe behavioral problems marked by explosive or combative behavior, and for short-term treatment of hyperactive children with conduct disorders. The oral forms are also approved for the management of manifestations of psychotic disorders broadly, in addition to the uses shared with the injection form.
