Theoretically, phellodendron might increase serum levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.
Phellodendron contains berberine. Preliminary clinical research shows that berberine can inhibit CYP2C9. Theoretically, phellodendron might also inhibit CYP2C9.

Here's the gist for Dronabinol (Marinol, Syndros): your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2C9 to help break this medicine down. Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and early human research suggests can slow that same enzyme. If CYP2C9 works slower, your body may clear dronabinol less quickly, so more of it can build up.

In real terms, that could mean stronger effects from this cannabinoid: more drowsiness, dizziness, a 'high' or foggy feeling, fast heartbeat, or low blood pressure when you stand. To be fair, this is a theoretical concern based on how the drugs work, not proven harm, and concentrated supplement doses matter more than tiny amounts. Don't change anything on your own, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the situation with these two. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to break down dronabinol (Marinol, Syndros). Phellodendron contains berberine, which lab and early human studies suggest can slow that same enzyme down. If the enzyme works slower, dronabinol may clear out of your system less quickly and build up a bit more than expected.

In real terms, that could mean stronger effects from the dronabinol, things like dizziness, drowsiness, a faster heartbeat, feeling foggy or anxious, or that "high" feeling being more intense. I want to be honest though: this concern is theoretical, based on how berberine behaves in the lab, not on proven cases. Still, since dronabinol already affects the brain, it's worth running this past your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

Phellodendron is a traditional Chinese medicine bark (Huang Bai) that contains berberine and other plant compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in lab studies. What Is Dronabinol Used For?

Brand names: Marinol, Syndros

Dronabinol — available as capsules (Marinol, Dronabinol) and as an oral solution (Syndros, Dronabinol oral solution) — is approved for two conditions in adults. First, it treats anorexia (severely reduced appetite) associated with weight loss in patients with AIDS. Second, it controls nausea and vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy in patients who have not gotten enough relief from standard anti-nausea treatments.

Both uses apply to all available formulations, but dosing timing and meal instructions differ between the capsule and oral solution products. Always follow the specific instructions for the product you have been prescribed.
