Propolis + Lansoprazole
Lansoprazole brand name: Prevacid.
Lansoprazole falls into 2 drug categories that Propolis can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, high doses of propolis might increase blood levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Propolis interacts with whole categories of medication. Lansoprazole falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Propolis in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Lansoprazole
Lansoprazole falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Propolis interacts with.
In vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP2C19. However, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP2C19 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that inhibit CYP2C19 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C19 to clear lansoprazole. In test-tube studies, propolis can slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, lansoprazole could linger a bit longer and build up, which in theory might mean more of its usual side effects, things like headache, stomach upset, diarrhea, or nausea.
The reassuring part is that this is really weak evidence. It comes from lab dishes, not people. In animal studies, propolis didn't meaningfully change this enzyme, likely because not much of it actually reaches the bloodstream. So for most folks taking normal amounts, I wouldn't lose sleep over it. If you take concentrated propolis daily, just mention it to your pharmacist so we can keep an eye on how you're feeling.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Lansoprazole also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
Some in vitro research shows that propolis extract can inhibit CYP3A4; however, other in vitro research shows that propolis has no effect on CYP3A4 activity. Furthermore, animal research shows that propolis extract does not significantly affect CYP3A4 activity when administered to rats at doses up to 250 mg/kg. It is postulated that the constituents of propolis that might in inhibit CYP3A4 in vitro do not have significant effects in vivo due to low bioavailability and hepatic first-pass effect. This effect has not been reported in humans.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist for Prevacid (lansoprazole). Your body partly clears this acid-reducing medicine using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a test tube, some propolis compounds appear to slow that enzyme down a bit, which in theory could let a little more lansoprazole linger in your blood. If that happened, you might notice slightly more of its mild side effects, like headache, diarrhea, or stomach upset.
That said, I want to keep this in perspective. This idea comes only from lab and animal studies, not from real people, and other lab work showed no effect at all. Everyday propolis use is unlikely to cause trouble. If you take concentrated, high-dose propolis regularly, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor so they can keep an eye on things.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Lansoprazole page
“Heartburn and reflux send plenty of people toward both lansoprazole (Prevacid) and the supplement aisle, and that pairing calls for genuine care, since three of the 153 ingredients on file here carry major-rated interactions. Most of the list works through the liver enzymes that clear lansoprazole, either slowing them down (grapefruit,…”

About Propolis
What is Propolis?
- Cold sores and herpes lesions (topical)
- Sore throat and mouth sores
- Wound and skin healing
- Immune support
- Oral and gum health
Propolis is a natural, resin-like substance made by bees that has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties in lab studies. Early research suggests it may help with cold sores, mouth sores, and minor wounds, but high-quality evidence is limited for most uses. It is generally well tolerated, but allergic reactions can occur, especially in people allergic to bee products.
About Lansoprazole
What Is Lansoprazole Used For?
Brand name: Prevacid
Lansoprazole is prescribed for a range of conditions where excess stomach acid is the problem. It treats active stomach and duodenal ulcers (sores in the stomach or upper small intestine), helps heal ulcers caused by NSAID pain relievers, and can reduce the risk of those ulcers coming back.
It's also used for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis (acid damage to the esophagus), and rare conditions where the stomach makes far too much acid — like Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. When combined with antibiotics, it helps wipe out H. pylori bacteria that cause recurring ulcers.

Natural Medicines records Lansoprazole as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Propolis — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
