Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the simple version: the ingredient that matters here is the phenylephrine in your cough and cold combo. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that mildly stimulates your system, and pu-erh tea naturally contains caffeine, which is also a stimulant. Stack them together and the everyday jittery effects can add up: a faster or pounding heartbeat, feeling restless or anxious, trouble sleeping, or a slight bump in blood pressure.

This is mostly an expert-opinion, theoretical caution, so for most healthy folks an occasional cup isn't a big deal. But if you drink a lot of pu-erh, or you have high blood pressure or heart issues, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.
