Rhodiola and Benzthiazide

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS

Why this applies to Benzthiazide

Benzthiazide falls under ANTIHYPERTENSIVE DRUGS — the group Rhodiola interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rhodiola with antihypertensive drugs might increase the risk of hypotension.
In vitro and animal research shows that rhodiola extract inhibits angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and might lower blood pressure.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Benzthiazide (Exna) is a thiazide-type water pill that helps lower blood pressure by getting rid of extra fluid and salt. Rhodiola, in lab and animal studies, seems to have a mild blood-pressure-lowering action of its own. So the worry here is simple: if you stack the two together, your blood pressure could dip a little lower than expected.

If that happens, you might feel lightheaded, dizzy, or a bit faint, especially when you stand up quickly. I want to be honest though, this concern comes only from early lab and animal research, not from studies in people, so it's more of a theoretical caution than a proven problem. If you'd like to try Rhodiola, check in with your pharmacist or doctor first, and keep an eye on how you feel.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Benzthiazide page

“Benzthiazide (Exna), a thiazide water pill prescribed for high blood pressure and fluid retention, comes with a supplement list I would treat with genuine respect. Most of what appears here either drops blood pressure further than intended or deepens the potassium and fluid loss the drug already causes, and a handful can strain the kid…”

About Rhodiola

What is Rhodiola?

Rhodiola
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Stress and coping (adaptogen)
  • Mental performance and focus
  • Mild depression
  • Physical and exercise performance

Rhodiola is an herb traditionally used to fight fatigue and help the body cope with stress. Some small studies suggest it may modestly reduce fatigue and improve mood, but the evidence is limited and not strong. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
