Rhodiola + Sildenafil Citrate
Sildenafil Citrate brand name: Viagra.
Sildenafil Citrate falls into 2 drug categories that Rhodiola can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, rhodiola might increase levels of drugs metabolized by CYP2C9.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Rhodiola interacts with whole categories of medication. Sildenafil Citrate falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Rhodiola in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Sildenafil Citrate
Sildenafil Citrate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C9 (CYP2C9) SUBSTRATES — the group Rhodiola interacts with.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP2C9. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. Also, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days reduces the metabolism of losartan, a CYP2C9 substrate, by 21% after 4 hours.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP2C9 to help clear sildenafil (Viagra). Rhodiola may gently slow that enzyme down, so in theory sildenafil could hang around a bit longer and feel a little stronger. That might mean more of its usual side effects, like headache, facial flushing, a stuffy nose, dizziness, or heartburn.
I want to keep this in perspective. The evidence here is mostly lab-based, plus one small study where rhodiola nudged the breakdown of a different drug by about 21%. That's modest, and effects vary a lot between products. Sildenafil isn't a prodrug, so this points toward slightly more effect, not less. If you're considering both, just check with your pharmacist or doctor first, especially if you take heart or blood pressure medicines.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Sildenafil Citrate also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that rhodiola inhibits CYP3A4. This effect is highly variable and appears to be dependent on the rhodiola product studied. However, a clinical study in healthy young males found that taking rhodiola extract 290 mg daily for 14 days does not inhibit the metabolism of midazolam, a CYP3A4 substrate.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the short version: your body clears sildenafil (Viagra) using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In a test tube, rhodiola can slow that enzyme down, and in theory that could let sildenafil build up a bit, which might mean more of its usual effects like headache, flushing, a stuffy nose, or dizziness from a drop in blood pressure.
The reassuring part is that this is mostly lab-based thinking. When rhodiola was actually tested in healthy people against a similar CYP3A4 drug, it didn't meaningfully change how that drug was broken down. So a real-world problem is unlikely, but since results vary by product, it's worth a quick chat with your pharmacist or doctor before combining them.

About Rhodiola
What is Rhodiola?
- Fatigue and low energy
- Stress and coping (adaptogen)
- Mental performance and focus
- Mild depression
- Physical and exercise performance
Rhodiola is an herb traditionally used to fight fatigue and help the body cope with stress. Some small studies suggest it may modestly reduce fatigue and improve mood, but the evidence is limited and not strong. It is generally well tolerated for short-term use, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before trying it, and avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
About Sildenafil
What Is Sildenafil Used For?
Brand name: Viagra
Sildenafil treats two distinct conditions depending on the product. Viagra (tablet) and Vybrique (dissolving oral film) are approved for erectile dysfunction (ED) — difficulty getting or keeping an erection. Generic sildenafil tablets and oral film are also approved for ED.
Revatio and several generic sildenafil products (tablets, oral suspension, and injection) are used for pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) — high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs — in adults to improve exercise ability and slow the disease from getting worse. Revatio oral suspension and injection are also approved for PAH in children ages 1 to 17.
