Apremilast falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist with rooibos and Otezla (apremilast): your body relies partly on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear apremilast out of your system. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not people) hint that strong rooibos extracts might slow that enzyme down. If that happened in your body, apremilast could linger a bit longer and its effects could be amplified, meaning you might notice more of its usual side effects like nausea, diarrhea, headache, or stomach upset.

I want to be honest about the evidence here: this is theoretical and based only on lab work. A regular cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. The bigger question mark is with concentrated rooibos extracts or capsules. If you're using those, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads up before mixing them with Otezla.

What Is Apremilast Used For?

Brand name: Otezla

Apremilast treats several immune-related conditions. In adults, it is used for active psoriatic arthritis (joint inflammation linked to psoriasis), plaque psoriasis in people who are candidates for light therapy or systemic treatment, and oral ulcers associated with Behçet's Disease (a rare inflammatory disorder causing mouth sores).

In children 6 years of age and older, Otezla is approved for active psoriatic arthritis and moderate to severe plaque psoriasis in patients weighing at least 20 kg. Otezla is the only brand supported by the evidence on this page; it is taken as an oral tablet.
