Here's the gist with this combo pill (aspirin, carisoprodol, and codeine). The piece that matters for rooibos is the muscle relaxer, carisoprodol. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2C19 to break it down. In test-tube studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that enzyme down. In theory, that could let carisoprodol build up a bit, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or grogginess than usual, and the codeine on top can add to that sleepy effect.

The honest truth is this is only lab-bench data, not something proven in people, so a regular cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos supplements are the bigger question mark. If you use those, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

This combination pill contains codeine, which is the piece that matters here. Codeine is a prodrug, meaning your body has to convert it into morphine using an enzyme called CYP2D6 before it can ease your pain. Early lab research suggests rooibos might block that same enzyme a little. If it does, less codeine would turn into morphine, so you could get less pain relief than expected rather than more.

The good news is this is only theoretical, based on test-tube studies, not real people, and a cup of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos extracts are a bigger question mark. If you take this medicine regularly, just check with your pharmacist or doctor before adding rooibos supplements.
