Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Here's the gist with your Dimetapp DM. One of its ingredients, dextromethorphan (the cough suppressant), is cleared from your body partly by a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Lab studies hint that rooibos may slow that enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let a little more dextromethorphan hang around, which might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or a foggy, lightheaded feeling.

I'll be straight with you though: this is based only on test-tube research, not real people, so the actual risk from drinking rooibos tea is likely very small. A regular cup of tea is far less concentrated than an extract. If you take this combo often or notice extra grogginess, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor.

About Rooibos

What is Rooibos?

Rooibos
  • Caffeine-free beverage
  • Antioxidant support
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset
  • General wellness

Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea from South Africa that is rich in antioxidants and generally considered safe as a beverage. While lab and early studies suggest possible benefits for heart health, blood sugar, and inflammation, strong human evidence is lacking for most medical uses. Enjoy it as a tea, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts for health reasons.
