Rooibos + Citalopram
Citalopram brand name: Celexa.
Citalopram falls into 2 drug categories that Rooibos can interact with; the most serious is rated moderate. Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP2C19 substrates may increase the effects of CYP2C19 substrates.

These two interact in 2 distinct ways. Each one is explained separately below.
Why Are There 2 Interactions?
Rooibos interacts with whole categories of medication. Citalopram falls into 2 of those categories, so it can interact with Rooibos in 2 different ways. We’ve listed each one below — your overall risk is driven by the most serious of them (Moderate).
CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES
1 of 2Why this applies to Citalopram
Citalopram falls under CYTOCHROME P450 2C19 (CYP2C19) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP2C19 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist with rooibos and your citalopram. Your body uses an enzyme called CYP2C19 to help break citalopram down. In lab dish studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that enzyme. If that happened in people, citalopram could clear out a little slower and build up, which in theory might nudge up its effects and side effects, things like drowsiness, nausea, or feeling jittery. Citalopram is also one drug where higher levels can affect heart rhythm, so it's worth being thoughtful.
The reassuring part: this is only test-tube evidence, not proven in humans, and a normal cup of rooibos tea is very different from a strong extract. Enjoy your tea, but check with your pharmacist before using concentrated rooibos supplements.

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES
2 of 2Citalopram also falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.
Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
Here's the gist: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear citalopram. In test-tube studies, concentrated rooibos extract slowed that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, more citalopram could linger in your system, which might nudge up side effects like drowsiness, nausea, headache, or feeling jittery. One thing worth knowing about citalopram is that high levels can affect heart rhythm (a QT change), so we don't love anything that pushes its levels higher.
That said, this is only lab evidence, not proof in people, and a normal cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to matter. Concentrated rooibos capsules are a different story. Before adding those, please check with your pharmacist or doctor.

What These Ratings Mean
Every interaction above is graded three ways — here’s the key to each label.
Clinically significant. Avoid the combination, or use only under close professional supervision.
Usually worth avoiding or managing — may need monitoring, a dose change, or timing apart.
Generally not serious. Be aware of it and mention it to your pharmacist.
- LikelyWell-controlled human studies have demonstrated the likely existence of this interaction.
- ProbableInteraction has not been documented in well-controlled studies, however, the interaction has been demonstrated in some small human studies or in controlled animal studies in conjunction with multiple case reports.
- PossibleInteraction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.
- UnlikelyInteraction has been demonstrated in animal or in lab research but has been shown not to occur in humans.

About Rooibos
What is Rooibos?
- Caffeine-free beverage
- Antioxidant support
- Heart health
- Blood sugar support
- Digestive upset
- General wellness
Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea from South Africa that is rich in antioxidants and generally considered safe as a beverage. While lab and early studies suggest possible benefits for heart health, blood sugar, and inflammation, strong human evidence is lacking for most medical uses. Enjoy it as a tea, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts for health reasons.
About Citalopram
What Is Citalopram Used For?
Brand name: Celexa
Citalopram — available as tablets (including brand Celexa), oral solution, and capsules — is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults. This includes depression that causes persistent low mood, loss of interest in everyday activities, changes in sleep or appetite, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.
Citalopram capsules are specifically indicated for adults with MDD but are not intended for starting or stopping treatment — another citalopram product must be used for dose titration. All forms are indicated for adults only; citalopram tablets are not approved for use in children.

Citalopram Is Linked to Lower Levels of One Nutrient
Natural Medicines records Citalopram as a medicine that can lower these. This is not an interaction with Rooibos — it is a separate effect of the medicine, and it is a reason some people are advised to supplement rather than to avoid one:
