Cobimetinib Fumarate falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist for Cotellic (cobimetinib). Your liver uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear this medicine out of your body. Lab studies (done in test tubes, not in people) suggest that strong rooibos extracts can slow that same enzyme down. In theory, if cobimetinib gets cleared more slowly, more of it could build up, which might mean stronger side effects like diarrhea, nausea, skin rashes, sun sensitivity, or changes in your vision or heart rhythm.

The good news: this is only early lab evidence, and a normal cup of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos supplements are the bigger question mark. Since cobimetinib is a serious cancer drug, please run any rooibos extract past your oncologist or pharmacist first.

About Cobimetinib

What Is Cobimetinib Used For?

Brand name: Cotellic

Cotellic (cobimetinib) is used in two ways. First, it treats adults with unresectable (cannot be surgically removed) or metastatic (spread to other parts of the body) melanoma that carries a BRAF V600E or V600K gene mutation — but only in combination with vemurafenib, another cancer drug. A tumor test must confirm the BRAF mutation before starting this combination.

Second, Cotellic is used on its own as a single agent to treat adults with histiocytic neoplasms, a group of rare cancers involving immune cells called histiocytes.
