Rooibos and Daridorexant

Here is the interaction we found between these two, with the evidence behind it.

Moderate

CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES

Why this applies to Daridorexant

Daridorexant falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.
Severity Moderate Likelihood Possible Evidence D

Interaction has been documented in animal or in lab research, or the interaction has been documented in humans but is limited to case reports or conflicting clinical research exists.

Dr. Brian Staiger, PharmD, BCPS
Dr. Brian Staiger explains PharmD, Clinical Pharmacist

Quviviq (daridorexant) is the sleep medicine you take at bedtime, and your body clears it using a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. The thought here is that rooibos may slow that enzyme down a little. If daridorexant clears more slowly, more of it can linger in your system, which could mean stronger or longer-lasting effects like next-morning grogginess, daytime drowsiness, or feeling foggy and slow to wake up.

Now, the honest part: this concern comes only from lab (test tube) studies, not from people, so it's theoretical. A regular cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos extracts are the bigger question mark. If you use those, just give your pharmacist or doctor a heads-up before mixing them.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Daridorexant page

“Daridorexant (Quviviq) quiets the brain's wake signals to treat insomnia, so supplements that add drowsiness or change how the liver clears it deserve real caution here. Of the 195 ingredients with a documented interaction, 9 rate major, and those are the ones to understand first.”

About Rooibos

What is Rooibos?

Rooibos
  • Caffeine-free beverage
  • Antioxidant support
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset
  • General wellness

Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea from South Africa that is rich in antioxidants and generally considered safe as a beverage. While lab and early studies suggest possible benefits for heart health, blood sugar, and inflammation, strong human evidence is lacking for most medical uses. Enjoy it as a tea, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts for health reasons.
