Deflazacort falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Here's the situation with rooibos and deflazacort. Once you swallow deflazacort, your body converts it into its active form and then relies on a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to clear it out. Lab studies (in a test tube, not in people) suggest a concentrated rooibos extract may slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, deflazacort could linger longer and its effects could run a bit stronger.

With this steroid, that might mean more of the usual side effects, things like fluid retention, mood changes, higher blood sugar, or stomach upset. But honestly, this is theoretical and based only on lab work. A regular cup of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. I'd only be cautious with strong rooibos supplements, and I'd run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

What Is Deflazacort Used For?

Brand name: Emflaza

Deflazacort treats Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic muscle disease that causes progressive muscle weakness. It is available under several brand names, each with slightly different age approvals.

Emflaza and Jaythari (both tablets and oral suspension) are approved for patients 2 years of age and older. Deflazacort tablets, Deflazacort oral suspension, Kymbee (tablet and oral suspension), and Pyquvi (oral suspension) are approved for patients 5 years of age and older.
