This combo cold medicine includes dextromethorphan, the cough suppressant, which your body clears largely through a liver enzyme called CYP2D6. Lab studies (in test tubes, not people) hint that concentrated rooibos extract may slow that enzyme down a bit. If that happened in real life, dextromethorphan could build up slightly and lead to more of its usual effects, like drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy.

Here's my honest take: this is a theoretical concern based only on lab data, and a normal cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos supplements are the bigger question mark. If you take those regularly, just run it by your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist with this combo product (which blends dextromethorphan, methscopolamine, and phenylephrine). Lab studies hint that rooibos extract may slow down a liver enzyme called CYP3A4, which helps break down dextromethorphan. If that enzyme works slower, a bit more of the medicine could hang around, which in theory might mean more drowsiness, dizziness, or feeling foggy.

I want to be honest though: this is only a test-tube finding, not something proven in people, and a normal cup of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause problems. Concentrated rooibos extracts would be the bigger question mark. None of these are prodrugs, so the worry is mild buildup, not lost benefit. If you use strong extracts regularly, just check in with your pharmacist or doctor first.
