Rooibos and Empagliflozin

We checked these two against our interaction database. Here is what we found.

No Known Interaction Found

We did not find a documented interaction between Empagliflozin and Rooibos in our sources. This does not guarantee that the combination is completely free of risk — there is often limited research on supplements and herbal products, especially around drug interactions.

If you decide to take both, the practical routine is simple: add one new thing at a time and note the date you started it. If the combination is going to disagree with you, it usually shows in the first days to a couple of weeks — and a start date turns “I’ve been feeling off” into something a pharmacist can actually work with. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.

Always talk with your pharmacist or doctor before making changes to your medications or supplements, particularly if you take several medications or have an ongoing health condition.

Rooibos safety at a glance

Rooibos overall Generally safe Rooibos tea is generally considered safe for most people when consumed in normal beverage amounts.
Pregnancy Use caution Likely fine as an occasional beverage, but concentrated extracts haven't been studied, so check with your provider.
Breastfeeding Use caution Little research exists, so use caution with extracts and ask your provider before regular use.

Safety guidance is general; always confirm with your pharmacist or doctor for your situation.

How we checked

Why No Interaction Is Listed for Empagliflozin

Interactions in our licensed database are recorded against drug classes, not just single drug names. Empagliflozin is filed under 3 classifications — including antidiabetes drugs, oral drugs. Rooibos has documented interactions with 7 drug classes — the most serious being ace inhibitors (aceis) (moderate), atorvastatin (lipitor) (moderate) and cytochrome p450 1a2 (cyp1a2) substrates (moderate) — and none of Empagliflozin’s classifications are among them.

Classification data comes from our licensed Natural Medicines dataset. A medication can belong to classes beyond those recorded there, so this describes how the check was run — it is not a safety guarantee.

What to actually watch for

What Rooibos Itself Has Been Linked To

This is not an interaction — nothing below involves Empagliflozin. It is the side-effect record for Rooibos on its own, from the licensed Natural Medicines monograph. If something new turns up after you add Rooibos, this list is the first place to look. One entry is worth acting on rather than waiting out — marked below.

  • A low platelet count / Liver problems Worth acting on Additional detail

“Orally, large and long-term doses of rooibos tea might cause hepatotoxicity in some susceptible patients. In a case-report, a 37-year-old man drinking 10 cups of rooibos tea daily for over a year presented with hepatic dysfunction and thrombocytopenia.”

Everything above comes from the Natural Medicines adverse-effect record for Rooibos — expand a row for the licensed statement it rests on. We read the ADVERSE REACTIONS section of Empagliflozin’s FDA label too, and the two lists don’t meaningfully overlap — which is why no Empagliflozin column appears here.

What Empagliflozin Is Prescribed For, and What Rooibos Has Been Studied For

These two come up together because they touch the same health topic — not because they do the same job. Empagliflozin is a prescription medicine with approved uses on its FDA label. Rooibos is a supplement: what follows is what researchers have looked at it for, and how strong that evidence is.

Empagliflozin is prescribed for: Jardiance (empagliflozin) tablets are approved for several important uses in adults. It reduces the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with heart failure. It also slows the progression of chronic kidney disease by reducing the risk of serious kidney decline, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, and hospitalization. In adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease, Jardiance reduces the risk of cardiovascular death.

Jardiance is also used — alongside diet and exercise — to improve blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes in adults and children aged 10 and older. It is not recommended for blood sugar control in type 1 diabetes (it may raise the risk of a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis) or in type 2 diabetes patients with severely reduced kidney function.

    Rooibos for diabetes

Although there has been interest in using oral rooibos for diabetes, there is insufficient reliable information about the clinical effects of rooibos for this purpose.

Effectiveness ratings and the research summaries above are the verbatim record from the Natural Medicines database, which grades evidence from “Effective” down to “Insufficient Reliable Evidence To Rate”. A rating below the top of that scale means researchers have looked at it — not that it works, and never that it can stand in for a prescribed medicine. Do not stop or replace Empagliflozin on your own; if you are taking Rooibos for the same health topic, tell your prescriber, especially if the medicine is being adjusted to a target.

From our pharmacist’s overview on the Empagliflozin page

“Almost everything on this page can nudge blood sugar in someone taking empagliflozin (Jardiance) for type 2 diabetes, heart failure, or kidney protection, and two entries deserve genuine caution before anything else. About Rooibos

What is Rooibos?

Rooibos
  • Caffeine-free beverage
  • Antioxidant support
  • Heart health
  • Blood sugar support
  • Digestive upset
  • General wellness

Rooibos is a caffeine-free herbal tea from South Africa that is rich in antioxidants and generally considered safe as a beverage. While lab and early studies suggest possible benefits for heart health, blood sugar, and inflammation, strong human evidence is lacking for most medical uses. Enjoy it as a tea, but talk to your pharmacist or doctor before using concentrated extracts for health reasons.

Aspalathus linearis · Fabaceae · Leaves and stems · Tea (loose leaf and tea bags), extracts, capsules, powders

An interaction check asks whether these two react with each other — it does not ask whether Rooibos is a good idea for someone in your situation. Here is what our Rooibos record says about it on its own.

Rooibos: dosing

There is no officially established medicinal dose for rooibos. As a beverage, it is commonly enjoyed as one or more cups of brewed tea per day.For extracts, capsules, or powders, follow the directions on the product label, since the amount of active compounds can vary widely between products.
