Eravacycline falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist for eravacycline (Xerava). Part of how your body clears this antibiotic runs through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. Rooibos has shown, in lab dish studies only, that it can slow that enzyme down. If that played out in people, your body might clear eravacycline a little more slowly, leaving slightly more in your system and possibly nudging up side effects like nausea, vomiting, or an upset stomach.

I want to be honest about the strength here: this is purely test-tube data, not something proven in patients, and concentrated rooibos extracts are far more likely to matter than a cup of tea. Eravacycline is also a short hospital IV course, so the overlap is brief. Still, mention any rooibos supplements to your care team so they can keep an eye on things.

What Is Eravacycline Injection Used For?

Brand name: Xerava

Xerava (eravacycline) is approved to treat complicated intra-abdominal infections (serious infections inside the belly — such as those involving the intestines, appendix, or other abdominal organs) in adults 18 and older. It works against a specific range of bacteria that commonly cause these infections.

Xerava is not approved to treat complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI). To help prevent antibiotic resistance, it should only be used when there is a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection that it can fight.
