Here's the simple version for your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel combo). Lab tests in a dish suggest that rooibos may slow down an enzyme called CYP1A2, which is one pathway your body uses to break down the estrogen part of your pill. If that enzyme is slowed, a little more estrogen could hang around, which in theory might mean more of the usual estrogen-type effects like nausea, breast tenderness, bloating, or headaches.

The good news: this is only a theoretical concern based on lab work, not real people, and a cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. I'd be a bit more cautious with concentrated rooibos extracts. If you drink it daily or use supplements, just mention it to your pharmacist or doctor to be safe.

Here's the gist with your birth control pill (the ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel combo). Your body uses a liver enzyme called CYP3A4 to help clear these hormones. In test-tube studies, a concentrated rooibos extract seemed to slow that enzyme down. If that happened in real life, your hormone levels could nudge a little higher, which might mean more of the usual side effects like nausea, breast tenderness, headaches, or breakthrough spotting.

The important part: this is only lab data, not something proven in people, and a normal cup of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Concentrated rooibos supplements are a bigger question mark. Before starting any rooibos extract, just check with your pharmacist or doctor.
