Mexiletine falls under CYTOCHROME P450 1A2 (CYP1A2) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP1A2 substrates may increase the effects of CYP1A2 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems inhibits CYP1A2 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist for mexiletine: your liver relies on an enzyme called CYP1A2 to clear it out of your system. Lab studies hint that rooibos may slow that same enzyme down a bit. In theory, that could let mexiletine build up more than expected, which might mean stronger effects and a higher chance of side effects like nausea, dizziness, tremor, or in rare cases worsening heart rhythm problems.

Now, the important part: this is only test-tube evidence, not something proven in people, so a normal cup or two of rooibos tea is very unlikely to cause trouble. Because mexiletine is a heart rhythm drug where small changes matter, I'd still mention any concentrated rooibos extracts to your pharmacist or doctor first.

Here's the gist for mexiletine: your liver uses an enzyme called CYP2D6 to help break it down. Lab studies hint that rooibos extract may slow that same enzyme. If that happened in real life, mexiletine could clear out a little more slowly and build up in your body, which might mean stronger effects and more side effects like nausea, dizziness, tremor, lightheadedness, or, in bigger swings, changes in your heart rhythm.

That said, this is very early evidence. It comes from test-tube work using concentrated rooibos extract, not from people drinking the tea, so a regular cup is unlikely to cause trouble. Since mexiletine is a heart-rhythm drug where small shifts matter, just mention your rooibos habit to your pharmacist or doctor.

About Mexiletine

What Is Mexiletine Used For?

Brand name: Mexitil

Mexiletine Hydrochloride capsules are indicated for the treatment of documented, life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias — for example, sustained ventricular tachycardia (a dangerously fast heart rhythm originating in the lower chambers). Because mexiletine itself can trigger arrhythmias, it is not recommended for minor or symptom-free irregular heartbeats.

Treatment is started in a hospital setting so heart rhythm can be monitored closely. Antiarrhythmic drugs, including mexiletine, have not been shown to improve overall survival in patients with ventricular arrhythmias.
