Why this applies to Mometasone

Mometasone falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Here's the short version: your body uses an enzyme called CYP3A4 to help break down mometasone. Lab studies hint that rooibos may slow that enzyme down, which in theory could let a bit more mometasone hang around. If that happened, you might see slightly stronger steroid effects or, with heavy long-term use, the usual concerns with corticosteroids like skin thinning or irritation where you apply it.

Now the reassuring part. This is only test-tube data, and mometasone cream or ointment barely gets into your bloodstream to begin with. Sipping rooibos tea is very unlikely to matter for a skin product. If you're using Asmanex (the inhaler) or concentrated rooibos extracts, just mention it to your pharmacist to be safe.

Mometasone Furoate topical products are used to relieve the inflammation and itching (pruritus) that come with corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses — a broad category of skin conditions that respond to steroid treatment.

Mometasone Furoate Topical Solution (Lotion) is specifically indicated for these skin conditions in patients 12 years of age and older. Mometasone Furoate cream may be used in adults and in children 2 years of age and older.
