Zolpidem falls under CYTOCHROME P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) SUBSTRATES — the group Rooibos interacts with.

Theoretically, taking rooibos with CYP3A4 substrates may increase the effects of CYP3A4 substrates.
In vitro research shows that the methanol extract of rooibos leaves and stems strongly inhibits CYP3A4 enzyme activity.

Here's the gist for your sleep med. Your body clears zolpidem mainly through a liver enzyme called CYP3A4. In test-tube studies, a concentrated rooibos extract slowed that same enzyme down. If that happened in a person, your zolpidem could hang around longer and hit harder. That might mean extra drowsiness, grogginess the next morning, dizziness, or feeling unsteady on your feet.

Now the reassuring part: this is only lab data, not something proven in people, and it used a strong extract, not the everyday cup of tea you'd sip. A normal mug of rooibos is very unlikely to be a problem. If you take concentrated rooibos capsules, check with your pharmacist or doctor first.

About Zolpidem

What Is Zolpidem Used For?

Brand names: Ambien CR, Intermezzo, Sublinox

Zolpidem is used short-term for insomnia. Most formulations — including Ambien, oral tablets, and Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules — are approved to help people who have trouble falling asleep at bedtime. Zolpidem Tartrate Capsules are specifically indicated for adults under 65.

The extended-release formulations (including Zolpidem Tartrate Extended-Release Tablets) help with both falling asleep and staying asleep through the night. Sublingual tablets (Edluar, Zolpidem Tartrate Sublingual Tablet, and Zolpidem tartrate sublingual) are taken as needed when you wake up in the middle of the night and cannot get back to sleep — but only if at least 4 hours of sleep time remain before you need to be up.
